What it is
Retinol is the most evidenced anti-ageing ingredient available without a prescription, and 0.5% is a serious concentration of it. The squalane base cushions it somewhat, but this is still a product that will cause flaking and redness if you rush it.

The Ordinary names the active and its percentage on the front of the bottle and leaves the
marketing off. That is the whole proposition, and it means you can see exactly what you are
buying. It also means the products are not cushioned the way a branded serum is, so introducing
one slowly and patch testing first matters more here than usual.

Who it suits
Skin that has used retinol before. If you are new to retinol, start with the 0.2% version instead and move up once your skin has built tolerance. This one is not an acne treatment.
How to use
- Evening only. Start one or two nights a week.
- Apply a small amount to the face after water-based serums, before oils and creams.
- Follow with moisturiser.
- Sunscreen every morning, without exception. Retinol makes skin more sensitive to UV.
Important cautions
- Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Retinoids are avoided in both. Speak to your doctor.
- Do not use alongside any other retinoid.
- Direct acids such as glycolic, salicylic or lactic acid increase sensitivity when combined. Use them on alternate nights.
- Some flaking in the first weeks is normal. Persistent burning or raw skin is not, and means to stop.
- Store cool and dry, away from light.
