How to Choose a Sunscreen for Dhaka’s Heat and Humidity
Dhaka’s sun is strong for most of the year, and the heat and humidity make heavy creams feel sticky within minutes. The best sunscreen is the one you are happy to wear every single day, so texture matters as much as the numbers on the tube.
SPF and PA: what the numbers mean
SPF tells you how well a sunscreen protects against UVB rays, the ones that cause sunburn. For daily use in a sunny climate, SPF 50 or SPF 50+ is a sensible choice.
The PA rating, used on most Korean and Japanese sunscreens, shows protection against UVA rays, which contribute to dark spots and early signs of ageing. PA++++ is the highest rating, so look for SPF50+ PA++++ when you can.
Pick a texture that suits humid weather
- Sun serums and gels feel the lightest and sink in quickly, which suits oily and combination skin. Try the SKIN1004 Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum.
- Light creams suit normal to dry skin and still feel comfortable in the heat, such as Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics.
- Mineral (physical) sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and are often gentler on sensitive skin, although some can leave a slight white cast. The AXIS-Y Complete No-Stress Physical Sunscreen is one option.
How much to apply
Most people apply far too little. For your face and neck, a good guide is two finger-lengths of sunscreen, squeezed along your index and middle fingers. Apply it as the last step of your morning skincare, after moisturiser and before makeup.
Reapply during the day
Sunscreen wears off with sweat, oil and touching your face. If you are outdoors, reapply every two hours, and again after sweating heavily. A light sun serum or gel is easier to layer again during the day than a thick cream.
Indoors and on cloudy days
UVA rays pass through clouds and window glass, so it is worth wearing sunscreen even when the sky is grey or you are sitting near a window.
A quick checklist
- SPF50+ and PA++++ for everyday use
- A light texture you enjoy wearing
- Two finger-lengths for face and neck
- Reapply every two hours when outdoors
