Double Cleansing: What It Is and Who Needs It

Double Cleansing: What It Is and Who Needs It

Double cleansing simply means washing your face twice in the evening: first with an oil-based cleanser, then with a water-based one. It is a core step in many Korean skincare routines, and it is especially useful if you wear sunscreen or makeup every day.

Why two cleansers?

Sunscreen, makeup and the oil your skin makes during the day are all oil-based, and they do not always rinse away with a foaming cleanser alone. An oil cleanser dissolves them first. The second, water-based cleanser then removes sweat, dirt and any oily residue, leaving your skin clean for the rest of your routine.

How to double cleanse

  1. Start with dry hands and a dry face. Massage a cleansing oil such as the Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil over your skin for about a minute.
  2. Add a little water to emulsify the oil (it turns milky), then rinse well.
  3. Follow with a gentle, low-pH cleanser such as the COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser or the CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser.
  4. Pat your face dry and continue with toner, serum and moisturiser.

Do you need to double cleanse in the morning?

Usually not. In the morning there is no sunscreen or makeup to remove, so a single gentle cleanser, or even just water if your skin is dry, is enough.

Is it right for every skin type?

  • Oily and combination skin often benefits most, because oil cleansers lift excess oil without stripping the skin.
  • Dry and sensitive skin can double cleanse too; choose a hydrating second cleanser and avoid scrubbing.
  • If your skin feels tight or squeaky afterwards, your second cleanser may be too harsh.
